The time has come for the end of the Atkinson Reporter original blogspot Due to a hacking campaign that has lead to interrupted service to all of us readers and participants. Apparently this decision was made in the best interest of everyone. I'm not the one to tell the whole story, it isn't my place and also i don't have the full accurate story to tell. But the good news to this story is that the Atkinson Reporter is still alive and is now on under the name Atkinson Reporter 2. The link is on the link list. But here it is.......

And for everyone else, Can you believe that the hackers went through all they did to stop or destroy our right to freedom of speech? Remember, your ex selectman Jack Sapia ordered the Atkinson Reporter blog signs to be taken down. And then lied on camera about talking to our town attorney about the whole deal. And then when a citizen went to claim these signs from the town, they disappeared. These are the kind of people who are out to stop your right to talk about your government. I won't be intimidated, and neither will the rest of you. The Reporter lives on!

I think we need to remember why we needed the Atkinson Reporter; our leaders were were not serving the people and were dishonest in an attempt to hold onto power.
The reason we needed the Atkinson Reporter was to create an atmosphere of openness and truth to allow the truth of what was happening to get "out there".
Unfortunately, the story of the demise of The Reporter seems to be lacking a fuller explanation of what really happened. Do we really want to start the new blog without knowing the full "truth" of what had happened?
Why would hacking "attempts" have led to the shutdown of the blog? What happened as a result of the hacking that closed the blog? The new blog is parked at the same internet site as the last; it should offer no new protections from hacking as the old one did. Something really seems "off" here.
So what's the real story? Why did the original management of the Reporter pack it up and walk away? Was there threat of legal action? Was the pressure put on them?
Let's start on the right foot here at the new blog; honesty and openness...
I'd like to know what happen too. If there was some nefarious activity going on, we should know.
To address 7:46's question regarding protection, you will notice that a new word verification box has been added and the letters look askew. This is a tool that prevents automatic scripts from accessing a site, either to create a bogus account, or tie it up (known as a Denial of Service (DOS) attack). The skewed letters are actually an image so it cannot be read as text and then automatically entered in the Word Verification box.
This technique is widely used and is effective best I can tell. Not knowing the what really happened, I'm guessing a DOS attack was part of it.
I also see that moderation has been turned off. This practice led to some disastrous results on the original blog. We should be allowed to speak our minds, but history has shown that moderation is needed.
Adding some security should offer protection to the site. Everyone knows that posting in never anonymous and your ISP knows what YOU are posting. Recent court cases attempting to get IPSs to disclose a user's identity have been unsuccessful. They would have to prove their client was harmed before it would even be considered. A politician's actions are not private and can be openly discussed and criticized.
I'm sure a moderation will be turned on at some point, I agree it should be on for obvious reasons. But as we know our politician's actions can be discussed publicly, and the Atkinson-Reporter did so. But why would someone take it upon themselves to hack into the Reporter? The ones who don't like the truth made public. The ones who do wrong, and continue to do so.
Now let me ask everyone this question, if it turned out that one of your local elected government offical's was behind this hacking, how would that make you feel? Totally hypathetical, but common sense is pointing in that direction in my opinion.

Mr. Sapia is on the Ethics, Conflict of Interest Committee? This is Oxymoronic and MORONIC. He needs impeachment immediately and to forfeit the right to run for any office in the Town of Atkinson. Removal of the blog signs not only was a denial of free speech. It was an election violation as at least one candidate was posting positions and announcements on the blog. In other words, these selectmen voted to hinder and disrupt the campaign of Valerie Tobin. Think that over carefully. The NH criminal division of the department of justice needs to be brought into this situation and a formal investigation instituted.

Mr. Sullivan's demeanor from start to finish was that of a dictator, and not a benevolent one either. Your next step should be a subpoena and to present that subpoena in a symbolic nature. (ALONG WITH OTHER INFORMATION NOT PREVIOUSLY DECLARED)
WE SCANNED THIS NEW INFORMATION FOR COMPARISON AGAINST WHAT WE WERE ORIGINALLY GIVEN.
IN THAT INFORMATION: WAS A JANUARY 2007 LETTER TO THE PREVIOUS BOARD, STATING NO LESS THAN THREE DIFFERENT DIVISIONS OF THE EPA HAD INFORMED THE BOARD THAT TWO YEARS WORTH OF REPORTS
WERE MISSING AND HAD NOT BEEN ADDRESSED.

1. WHY DIDN’T THE PRIOR BOARD KNOW THOSES REPORTS WERE REQUIRED?
2. WHY WEREN’T THEY COMPLETED IN TIME?

IN THIS LAST ELECTION, BLOG SIGNS WERE MADE AN ISSUE. IN PARTICULAR, THE ATKINSON REPORTER
BLOGSPOT.COM SIGNS WERE DECLARED ILLEGAL, BASED ON LEGAL OPINION (AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE)
DISPERSED BY THEN CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD JACK SAPIA. THAT BOARD ORDERED THE SIGNS REMOVED
(HOPEFULLY NOT DESTROYED) AND PERSONS (NOT NAMED) RESPONSIBLE FOR PLACING SAID SIGNS, WERE
LABELED COWARDS.

5. WHAT PUBLIC NOTIFICATION HAS BEEN ISSUED TO CORRECT THE FACT THE SIGNS WERE NOT ILLEGAL?
6. WHAT HAVE THE SELECTMEN DONE, IN ORDER TO AVOID ANOTHER LEGAL SUIT AGAINST THE TOWN?
7. WHAT STEPS IS THE TOWN GOING TO TAKE, TO INSURE FREEDOM OF SPEECH WILL NOT BE INFRINGED UPON AGAIN?
8. WHEN WILL A PUBLIC APOLOGY BE GIVEN TO THOSE ATKINSON TAXPAYERS THAT WERE BRANDED COWARDS?

COMMITTEE HAS A REAL PROBLEM WITH JACK SERVING ON THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST COMMITTEE. WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE BOARD INTENDS TO DO, TO REMOVE HIM FROM SERVING IN THAT CAPACITY. IT IS OUR OPINION THAT HE NOT BE ALLOWED TO SERVE IN ANY PUBLIC CAPACITY, NOW OR IN THE FUTURE.

I agree. The ONLY ONES that would want / need to hack this web site, are the "Powers That Are" in the Atkinson Town Hall. Especially, since the important water issue is coming up for vote.
These people do not serve the people of Atkinson; they only serve the "Special Interests" they want to promote. The graft must be of large amount, to risk the Feds coming in to investigate. It's time to take them out of office, and out of our town. Down with all of them

And while I don't think Paul Sullivan is perfect, I think the slamming he is taking above is possibly unwarranted.
Think of the effect of calling everyone that you don't agree with an "enemy". What's the result? You drive even decent people into the hands of the people that need to be controlled in this town.
Can't you imagine it; the Chief and Sapia saying, "See Paul, I told you those blog people were nuts. Don't listen to them, they're a bunch of unhappy lunatics..."
Sullivan is the first person with the guts to stand up to the Chief (Sapia turned into Jello and a typical politician, some tough guy). He's also willing to butt heads with people, and has signs of being a decent human being. Work WITH him, not against him. Just because someone doesn't agreee with you 100% of the time doesn't mean that you need to make him into an enemy. We need to be intellgent here, and sometimes progress comes in steps; everything isn't going to get fixed as fast as you'd like...
I served with Paul Sullivan on Budget Committee a few years ago, and I always found him to be an honorable man.
He would recuse himself from discussions of Fire dept. budget just because he was a volunteer, part time, as an EMT. He did the right and honorable thing even though the law didn't require it. Our former Board of Selectmen could, in my opinion, take a lesson from him.
To those of you who believe Mr. Paul Sullivan was trying to do the right thing. That was then, this is now.

I think 12:33 PM's comments are a little harsh but you do have to consider the progress of the current board.
Mr. Sullivan has had several golden opportunities to reign the chief in. He's poked around the edges but nothing has changed. The chief got his car and best I can tell not even a reprimand for the vacation pay issue and the incompetence shown regarding the abduction attempt.
I never expected the chief to be fired, but I was really hoping he would start being held accountable.
This board is clearly not the disaster the Sapia board was, but it has not been as effective as hoped.
