New Eggies opens in Atkinson

From the Eagle Tribune;

New Eggies opens in Atkinson

By Jillian Jorgensen jjorgensen@eagletribune.com

ATKINSON — Those who may have been forlorn to see their favorite Plaistow diner — a little rundown on the outside but offering great food inside — closed down can relax. Eggies is alive and well, just down the road a ways and one town over.

"This is more like a restaurant," said owner Kevin Barden. "There's a lot more room. It's all brand new and beautiful."

The new Eggies, with hardwood floors and bright, airy dining rooms, is a bit different than the long counter stretching through the old-fashioned diner in Plaistow. But Barden said with the rent rising and the building deteriorating, it was time to move on.

"Most people came in and told me they loved the food. Not many came and told me how much they loved the building," Barden said.

The old Eggies closed June 28, and the new location opened July 15. Barden, 53, of Derry, said his business has practically doubled since the move.

While the look is new, much has stayed the same. Barden took his staff with him, which will keep plenty of his regulars happy.

When Joe Roy, 51, of Sandown was asked to name his favorite thing about Eggies, he didn't think long before saying, "The waitresses."

Roy, who usually orders two eggs over easy with kielbasa, said he liked the new place but did miss the old bar. The longtime customer said he's seen Eggies grow over the years.

"I've been going to Eggies for a long time, probably about nine years," he said. "This is the biggest change."

Eggies has been around even longer than that. Barden has run the restaurant since February 1993. A former Marine, he's been cooking even longer, having prepared meals for Marine recruits on Parris Island, S.C.

In the larger, newer kitchen last week, he proudly showed off homemade specialties: black bean salsa, salad dressings, barbecue and hollandaise sauce. A heap of breakfast potatoes cooked on the grill, covered with his own seasoning. Roy said he prepares each meal individually, and hopes to make the food unique.

"You can't get it anywhere else," he said. "You can only get it here at Eggies."

The new restaurant holds a special place in Marilyn Wentworth's heart.

The 73-year-old, who now lives in Florida, dropped in last week to visit what she said was once her parents' home, built in 1957. She dropped in with her son, David Vencis, 55, of Exeter.

"My mother's looking down smiling because she loved to cook," Wentworth said. "It brings back a lot of memories."

The menu has expanded along with the size of the restaurant, but old favorites — eggs Benedict, omelettes, pancakes and meatloaf in the colder months — will remain.

Benjamin Goldbaum, 31, of Atkinson usually orders the eggs Benedict. He said the move was great news for him.

"I like it," he said, "because I live right across the street."

Goldbaum said the food and the waitstaff have kept him coming back for more than five years.

"They're easy to talk to," he said.

Lisa Liguori, 52, of Salem has been bringing Eggies customers their meals for 15 years. Though she loves the new spot, it was hard to leave the old Eggies behind.

"Of course," she said. "It has nostalgia." The diner was built in 1952.

Eggies is now open for business at 6 Main St. (Route 121) in Atkinson.

We went right after it opened & my husband thought it was over priced compared to other breakfast places in the area. I didn't care for the food. We weren't offered a refill of coffee until we were all done & ready to leave. Then had to wait & wait for the girl to come back & take the check & $$$. We haven't been back.

We've eaten at Eggies for years and always enjoyed the food and service. New place is no different. Perhaps anon August 25,2010 7:47 PM should have used better manners with the help to get better service, although we've always noticed how their help caters to the rude like those with good manners. It's just their upbringing.

Bikers by appearance always seem to be intimidating. Most are no better than you or me when it comes to "manners". They have to eat some where and will seldom cause a problem where they do it no matter who is eating in their presence. Another words they don't crap where they get good food and service . Just make believe your in a place where truckers eat and the food is worth while stopping for.

Had breakfast at Eggies and the food was good. However I would like to see them offer a la carte choices as opposed to a set offering. I ordered # 6 which consisted of 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, homefries and beans. I asked them to bring it without the beans and homefries as I would not eat so much for breakfast. I still had to pay for them anyway as it was part of that #6 breakfast. My only other complaint if you want to call it that, is that the rooms are very noisy, I think because the ceilings are very low. Service was good and the place is attractive. Prices are on the high side.

I resent you implying that we were rude people!! Absolutely untrue...we chatted w/the waitress etc. I felt as though everyone at the other tables could listen to our conversation...there are no booths which would solve that problem. There are other breakfast places in the area so we do have other choices. I still say that the coffee should be refilled while you're still eating...not when you're leaving.

Is this a joke? This post appeared 11 days ago, and people are just starting to put things up? Has this Blog gone from bitching about politics to bitching about food? Please say whoever is posting here is pulling my chain. I'm still waiting for Leon's "I Hate the Osborn's" review.

Moderator,

Can you please start an Atkinson Restaurant Review blog? This is too much! ;-)

Mr. Brownfield says,

I disagree. I think the new Eggies more interesting than more drama. Who has not heard about all that drama? You can't eat drama. Too much attention on too few is bad for the digestion. Give me EGGS I say.

Yesterday I was taking photographs of a new dental office YET AGAIN and it was frustrating because instead of dresses, some of the staff showed up in shorts YET AGAIN! How can I take professional photographs for a magazine with some of the dental staff in shorts? Head shots only! Depressed, I then went to the new Eggies to treat myself eating out.

Here is my take. I like the new Eggies but also liked the old Eggies diner style atmosphere and miss it. The new one does seem more noisy to me. That could be fixed if the owner put in carpeting. Doing that would take down the noise level but make it harder to clean up. (I do seem to have issues with my hearing in most restaurants.) The waitress told me it was quieter in the back room. I went to check it out and there was a big long table and another table or two. The tables were fully occupied as well but is was much more quiet. But what really drew my attention was this large aquarium at the back on the right. I couldn't believe it. Then I remembered this article I read about how aquariums are a new status symbol and some people spend thousands if not tens of thousands on aquariums for their big homes. I wonder how many 4 car garage homes have a big aquarium next to the grand piano.

Anyway, the new Eggies with an aquarium is quite a transformation from the old Eggies with big trucks in the lot.

The waitresses were friendly but very busy as the place was jammed. I can't comment on the general breakfast prices as I wasn't paying attention. But it is going on 6am now and I think I will head over to Eggies and look at the prices again. But, as 1/2 billion eggs have recently been recalled for salmonella should I have pancakes? I bet I am not the only one who wants to know if their eggs came from Iowa.

What I think is great is there is a new breakfast place in Atkinson. It is like when the Barnes and Noble bookstore came to Salem with hours till late in the evening and it seemed like civilization had finally arrived.

Does the Atkinson Country Club serve breakfast? They must but I rarely go there so I don't really know. I wonder if they will acquire an even bigger aquarium to compete. And I wonder who will be first to give scratch tickets and put in a NH lottery machine like Hannifords. If I see a big lottery machine next to a big aquarium I think I will lose my appetite for breakfast fare.

It is 6:25pm. I am out of here.

Sorry to say this, but Eggies seems to be the only thing going on right now in Atkinson. I search the ET daily, but I guess nothing we do or say is news worthy!

Anonymous said...

Summer is always slow for news even if the ET would print it. Perk up...... fall is almost here and news will pick up. You know how it goes...........slow news through the summer then all of a sudden BANG ..........CORRUPTION IS EXPOSED! Wouldn't be surprised if it were to happen here any day now, we'll have to just stay tuned, right?
