I'm not sure what this -- or your link to meet barack obama.com -- have to do with Atkinson news. However since you want to "go there..."

As much as republicans would like to blame democrats for the crisis, they are way off base. This video conveniently leaves out the fact that in 1994, the democratic congress passed a bill that would restrict unregulated subprime mortgages and Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserce refused to do this. While you can "trace" the roots of the problem back to the Carter administration, the original intent was to prevent discrimination in lending practices.

Let's not forget that one of the central figures in the Savings and Loan crisis in the late 1980's/early 1990's, which happened under the Reagan/Bush administrations, was none other than John McCain, a member of the infamous "Keating Five." The original S&L crisis (Google THAT) cost the American taxpayer ONLY $125 billion. Let's add that amount on to the $700 billion this current crisis -- eerily similar, both in circumstances and administrations -- is costing us. Quite frankly, listening to McCain grandstand about the need for government regulation for lending institutions is a complete joke. Given his history in the first S&L scandal, and his subsequent inaction to do anything that would prevent something like this happening again (which is has!), his words ring as empty as his threats not to debate unless a deal is in place.

Republicans can play the blame game all they want (that seems to be all they are good for nowadays,) but the majority of the blame of this crisis falls squarely on the shoulders of the limited government, free market neo-cons.

To me, it always seems funny to hear republicans talk about lowering taxes, when the reality is the American taxpayer will inevitably have to foot the bill for their money grubbing corruption. How much do we really save with conservatives in power? ZERO!

That's funny when I google Keating Five, and read the federal prosecutor's comment about McCain, was that he was NOt a central figure, but peripheral, and that he never should have been investigated in that mess.

"Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised "poor judgment" - Wiki

You write: "...he never should have been investigated in that mess."

Wha? Let's take this back to local politics (since that's what this blog is supposed to be about)...it is funny to me how some can be so easy to dismiss someone's (i.e. McCain's) involvement in a scandal, when they have been "cleared." Yet, our new town administrator took some tough criticism on this blog for his ethics violation, even though he was "cleared" of any wrong doing as well.

Funny how that works, eh? Don't let your politics blind you boys!

First of all, prosecutor said Glenn and McCain did nothing wrong.

Second, that is quite a bit different from a police chief found in contempt of court, or selectmen settling a lawsuit for $30,000 as long as there is no admission of responsibility.

Third, did you notice in the debate, how McCain kept saying what he did, how he voted when an issue came up, and Obama kept saying "John is right" 21 times he said "John is right". But I noticed Obama, never said what he did, when an issue came up.....

Oh, that's right...

That's because he hasn't done anything about any of these issues. He has never LED! He always chose to vote present. Can't do that as Commander in Chief!

"First of all, prosecutor said Glenn and McCain did nothing wrong."

Same was said about Mr. Angelo. Yet we get comments on this blog like:

"I'd leave Mass too....in NH they don't really distinguish between ethics and etHICKs."

and

"Now we know why he one the job. He views ethics law as mere "guidelines."

You write:

"Second, that is quite a bit different from a police chief found in contempt of court, or selectmen settling a lawsuit for $30,000 as long as there is no admission of responsibility."

I disagree with you and I encourage others to dig deeper about Sen. McCain's involvement in the S&L crisis and come to their own conclusions about the role he actually played in it.

Finally, regarding your third point, what does that have to do with this topic? Nothing!

I also heard McCain mention Ronald Reagan umpteen million times too. Someone should wake him up and tell him the 1980's are over and Ronnie is not walkking through that door. The man is stuck in the 80's (Hey, I don't blame him. He and Cndy were living large off of Charles Keating!) and after watching Sarah Palin implode on the Katie Couric interview, he is as risky a proposition as I've ever seen.

I AM curious;

Can we agree that your only real choice is between McCain and Obama?

One of them is going to be President.

Now would you please tell me what Obama has accomplished that would qualify him to be leader of the free world?

What experience does he bring to the table?

What has he led?

When has he had to make an executive decision, and live or die by that decision?

When has he exhibited the strength of character, to stand up and do what he felt is right, even though it bucked his own party?

Anonymous said...

So can someone please tell me how standing up and bucking your own party makes you qualified to be president? Are you saying this is the ONLY way to judge strength of character?

Also, despite your attempt to focus solely on McCain and Obama, I am not sure how you can do this given the fact that Sen. McCain has elected to make someone who, as every day passes, truly proves herself to be supremely unqualified for the job as president (and VP for that matter.) Gov. Palin meets all of the criteria (and then some) you list below as a person not qualified to be president. And she could be only one heart beat away from the job.

If you want to go by "experience," I would be interested to hear your opinion on this choice. To me, it says, easily swayed to make a pick that panders to the right wing. Now what does that say about McCain's character?

Anonymous said...

I find it laughable, that every time I ask an Obama Supporter that question, they bring up Sarah Palin. I never mentioned her, but now that you bring her up, even she has more qualifications than Obama, and he is not running to be a "heartbeat away" but for the top job himself!

Why should we compare the Top of the Democrat ticket to the bottom of the Republican ticket?

And you still failed to elucidate any of Mr. Obama's sterling credentials.

Still Waiting.......

PS: I never said that qualifies you to be President, I said it shows a strength of character that Obama has yet to demonstrate.

OK Mark,

Here are the answers to your questions:

Experience and leadership: 10 years senate - 8 state/2 federal

Worked for $13,000 / year helping inner city Chicago poor. Registered 150,000 people to vote. Graduated first black president of Harvard Law Review, passed over 600 high money law firm offers to work for civil rights practice at fractional pay.

Adds health insurance for 20,000 children, Welfare reform, Earned income tax credit, increased minimum wage ($5.15 to $6.50). Death penalty reform making interrogations be video taped passed Senate 58-0, signed to law by governor who first opposed Obama’s bill. Sponsored bill probing police profiling.

Worked with republican senator Lugar to expand and author program to locate & dismantle stray Russian WMD’s left over from the cold war after the disbanding of the USSR.

Jan. 2007, major ethics/lobbying reform bill, w/ Russ Feingold insisted tougher measures banning lobbyist gifts/ meals/ jets, disclosure of earmark & contribution bundling to candidates or committees; restricts retiring Congress from going into lobbying.

Toured Kuwait, Jordan, Israel, Palestinian territories, he told Palestinian Authority Abbas that US would never recognize Hamas leaders until they renounced mission to attack Israel. In Africa, publicly took AIDS test as example of responsibility.

Obama cosponsored Secure Orderly Immigration Act by John McCain. Passed 62-36. Makes undocumented persons who have been here 5+ years only allowed to stay and apply for citizenship, if pay back taxes, learn English and no criminal record. 2 million undocumented persons who have been in the United States for less than two years would be ordered home.

Called for increased fuel efficiency standards (3% / year).

To answer your last question. Sen Obama not only voted against going to war with Iraq, he stood up against it while he was running for senate.

Mark, have you read his June 21, 2008 floor statement on the Iraq debate?

I agree that one of the candidates has to become president. What you have to recognize is that the congress and senate are the ones who we send to Washington to represent us in the making and passing of laws. They are the ones you should be watching and kick out of office if they won't do what the people want. The big mistake so far in this administration was not making the president and vice president accountable enough to have thrown them out of office and into prison. This goes the same for those in the congress and senate that did the same things by backing up those two that were supposed to be representing us and not big business powered by the lobbyists. ::: Side note- Why do we call all the fighting involvements we have been in since WW 2 wars when there has never been one officially declared by our leaders ? Korea was said to be a police action but I can't recall what the others were designated as. Just wondering is all .

I think Phil Consentino should run for president. Couldn't do any worse than dubya.

Come on, you know this is a funny statement. Who else could lead us to:

A war we didn't need
Demolished international relations
Housing market collapse
Stock market collapse
Financial sector collapse
Record oil prices
Rising unemployment now 6%
Record budget deficits
Record national debt

Oh, and I guess this whole global warming thing has probably got some legs (hey I said probably).

Kinda sounds like Atkinson town govt, don't it?

Sorry, but I wanted John McCain in 2000. The world would be a different place now. But the republicans wanted their puppet and got what they asked for. Unfortunately now, McCain sounds too much like dubya and the whole republican party has lost its way and its credibility.

While I would rather see McCain win, his selection of Palin is forcing me to vote for Obama because just having the potential for an inexperienced, hot hockey mom as president (as much as I like the idea), was the last straw. The republican party is at its lowest point in my lifetime. Thank you dubya for the worst presidency in the history of the United States. And thank you Phil for the worst police chiefdom in the history of small town govt. You and dubya should be roommates at his new presidential library.
