Atkinson loses another administrator
By Cara Hogan
chogan@eagletribune.com

ATKINSON — After less than two years on the job, Town Administrator Phil Smith is returning to police work.

Smith gave his notice to selectmen Tuesday.

"I got another opportunity in Roswell, N.M.," Smith said yesterday. "I will be the deputy chief of the police department."

His last day in Atkinson is Sept. 15.

He's just the latest in a long list of relatively short-term administrators. And selectmen haven't always had an easy time filling the job.

Before Smith was hired in September 2009, the town went seven months without an administrator.

But short-term administrators are the norm for a town this size, Selectman Fred Childs said.

"I hope the next town manager will last long," Childs said. "It's a small town, so it's a stepping stone for people. If they can make more money someplace else, they do. That's what happens."

For Smith, who served as police chief in Alton before taking the Atkinson job, it's a chance to move to a warmer climate and return to police work.

"I realized I just really love being in law enforcement. I'm getting back to a field I'm more comfortable with and what I love to do, but it's no knock on Atkinson," he said. "Atkinson was right next door to my hometown and I've learned a lot of new skills being here. It's going to make my police work much more effective and efficient."

Selectmen have begun to search for his replacement.

"We are starting to search for a new town manager today," Childs said yesterday. "It depends on who applies, how long it takes. Sometimes it takes a long time, sometimes it doesn't, depends on the candidates you get."

Selectmen's Chairman William Bennett said he understands why Smith decided to leave.

"He's got a better job and a better income," he said. "I get it."

The town hasn't yet decided whether to hire a consulting company to help with the search, selectmen said.

It's likely the town will be without an administrator for a few months, but administrative assistant Barbara Snicer will fill in, something she's done before.

In fact, Childs pointed out, Snicer has filled in the last two times the town was without an administrator.

Atkinson has gone through a few short-term town managers in the past few years.

The longest someone has stayed on the job in recent memory was Russell McCallister's three-and-a-half-year stint that ended in January 2008. Then came interim administrator Craig Kleman for about four months. He was followed by Steven Angelo, who lasted less than five months, leaving in January 2009.

Smith will be moving to a much larger community when he heads to Roswell. It has about 50,000 residents and a 96-person police department.

"It's a fantastic opportunity career-wise and a lot of us policemen who live in the snowier areas like to make our second bids toward warmer climates," he said. "There's a lot going on in that city. I'm looking very much forward to the challenge."

But he said he's going to miss the people he's worked with in Atkinson.

"I've had the privilege and honor of working with some wonderful people here in Town Hall," Smith said. "That was the most refreshing thing coming out of law enforcement, finding this level of quality people that provide service the community."

Many who blog here are patriotic, honest, taxpaying Americans much to be admired. Unlike the majority of voters who just "go along " with town mismanagement, these individuals speak out.

It causes thugs and bullies enormous concern as it is a threat to their mafia style domination.

My prediction is the blog will continue to flourish as it is needed. If you truly want to get rid of the people who post then change. Hire more professionals instead of uneducated amateurs, stop spending money like drunken sailors; lower our taxes. Obey the laws of the state...the Right To Know law (No, you don't), RSA Laws at town Deliberative Session, State Law when it comes to the Police Department, equal enforcement of the laws, reduction of corruption generally in Atkinson.

People with the courage to stand up and speak out for justice cannot be silenced even by tanks, bullets, snipers, bombers, arrests, murder. Look at Egypt and Syria et al. People naturally are willing to sacrifice themselves to end corruption and achieve justice the world over.

These are the brave ones and they will fight you forever. Your two-bit threats mean nothing to a hard core Patriotic American. We understand what you are and we stand up to you with courage and honor year after year.

Go ahead. Issue threats to citizens. It works in OUR favor. Every time you do it new people realize something is terribly wrong and they must join the ATKINSON REBELLION. We will defend ourselves effectively and go after you until you stop bullying and threatening people and do your sworn duties. Follow your oaths of office.

We lost a good TA and a better Chief than we have! Poor us.

Anonymous said...

"It's a small town, so it's a stepping stone for people."

So. The BOS pays this manager to hande their business. The new TA learns the job, collects the big checks, then STEPS UP to a better position. Then the cycle repeats again again again. So. It has nothing to do with corruption or callous thugs. Atkinson is just a STEPPING STONE and Atkinson taxpayers are THRILLED to pay The big bucks to build their careers. What a generous town this is. Money growing on trees and gifts from the innocent and vulnerable elderly grows and grows.

In a country with an unofficial unemployment figure of 25% you would think the Board of Selectmen would make better choices from a wider range of people seeking PERMANENT employment.

Maybe a lightbulb will ignite and they will seek help from Municipal Resources.

But if the town continues to violate it's citizens, it is impossible to hold a Town Administrator. You see...it is that SMELL of a rotten town that sends them packing.

I think the man was over qualified for what the job entailed, and the pay was too high based on the work load and type of duties. It was close to home, pretty easy to do, pay was ok, why not take it for awhile? Not something to brag about though....

I'll bet he was bored and sick of the quibbling that is everywhere here. I'll bet he was bored enough to be ready to accept a high profile, high paying, exciting position he can be proud of doing.

So, the BOS should look at the fact that sitting around waiting for Bill B to show up on-line, is hardly enough work for two people and the pay should be cut for tis position.

Anonymous said...

does that mean barbera will get another raise in the meantime

Anonymous said...

Of course it does. Conman has to make sure his SNITCH gets paid well for feeding him information that the selectmen don't want him to have.

Who says you can't have an illicit love affair at 70 years of age? The conman is living proof!

What good is corruption without an illecit affair thrown in? That's what novels are made of!

Anonymous said...

Hey, I want to be a Town Adminster whose job is do the bidding of the Board of Selectmen.

Uh, mr. Smith. Could you remind me to file that report tomorrow? My memory is going. Phil could you sit in the selectmen cubicle with Barb for the next 5 hours. A taxpayer may wander by and did you make those photocopies?

Listen up. We are paying you $70,000 a year to be our "go-fer" so get up and get fer. The trash cans are full and we just got the call... the chief's dog is due for a piss. So snap to.

Anonymous said...

Not nice.

He didn't design the job, the BOS did, and the BOS chose his pay rate as well.

It's pretty dumb to make these comments that somehow blame him for making th e$$ he was making.

Do you have his credentials? Nope, didn't think so, or YOU would be in that job or going to NM.

So, stop with the sour grapes o jealous one.

Anonymous said...

we need him because the bos cant think for them selfs he had to sit with bill b an hour before the meetings just so he new what he was doing and poor bill b still could not get it right

Anonymous said...

To bad they didn't take his advice. We are left with a big mess.

Anonymous said...

Well, Phil Smith is gone. Now we're stuck with same old town hall lamers, do-nothing BOS, that nut Philbert Consentino and all of the elderly he's duped. Now that's progress. Someone please set me straight.

Anonymous said...

"He didn't design the job, the BOS did, and the BOS chose his pay rate as well."

That's the point. They paid him a hugh amount of money and then didn't impliment his the professional advice they paid him for. Instead relegated him to paperwork and gave him the run-round. Otherwise he would have stayed and maybe moved into the top slot. Instead, he fled to NM to escape the corruption. Here.

I am not jealous. What am I saying. Darn tootin I would like to have Phil Smiths credentials and pay scale.

But I am not jealous of the ridiculous tasks he was assigned. What a waste of talent!

Anonymous said...

Once upon a time, when I stopped in Town Hall, and went down to say Hello to Mr. Smith. Bill Friel was chairman. I told him he'd hate that job during the next chairman's reign.

Bet I was right.

Anonymous said...

What I hope is Smith is able to fix the PD with the MRI report before NM. If he does there will be a citizen warrant article for a plaque to Smith and MRI in the police station thanking them for creating public safety in Atkinson.

"Out with the expensive old; in with the affordable new."

Anonymous said...

This idiot cluttering up this blog with inane mumbling is an excellent example of the type of idiocy we face in cleaning this town of the corrupt bullying that's been going on for too long.

The MRI report will be in soon; hopefully, with recommendations that we get a real chief. Who can sell off a few cars, put officers back on the streets WORKING and PATROLLING (what the hell do we need detectives and $60,000+ lieutenants for in a little town with no crime, it doesn't make sense)! Bye-bye buddy system, bye-bye detectives and officers that do no work. A new sheriff's in town, and it's called the MRI!!!

Anonymous said...

Out With the old con men. He wasnt qualified tondo the job either way. Check out the resume. Do your research. Were in a better position. Need new blood in there to back up the chief. Not against him. The people on this blog are mostly jealous of him anyways. Imagine being jealous. It's like having so many cats but you don't know which one to pet. Poor cats they get confused. Love one day none the next. Chow mix one day none the next.

Anonymous said...

I am not jealous of you. You lack peace of mind and suffer MRI poking around.

I emvy Smith who will soon be smelling the clean air of NM and watching the colorful sunsets. Basking in the Taos hot springs with his beautiful babe. Driving his truck down the valley od San Cristobal. Wearing a new Indian torquoise ring.

--Petty small town politics gone, gone, gone. Sigh....

Anonymous said...

"Need new blood in there to back up the chief. Not against him. The people on this blog are mostly jealous of him anyways. Imagine being jealous."

No one can back the Chief up now without implicating themselves (yes, it's one word, not two).

Must be true about the jealousy though, the babe on his arm, the handsome physically fit physique, great salary he makes, beautiful home. Yup that's it, we're jealous.

Get an MRI (the other one), your brain is shrinking. If that's even possible.

What I wonder is how the guy can survive raising two kids and a wife on a $20k salary. Even if you count a few hundred extra a month for a Sears pension, it is barely above poverty level, if so.

How does he afford an antique red Caddy convertible, a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle, a horse, a tractor, his taxes, medication (must be alot) and then, all the normal living expenses?

How? Is someone helping him financially? He can't be earning enough on his own to pay for all this stuff.

Anonymous said...

The average new Harley cost $25,000.00. How do you squeeze that out of a $22,000.00 salary?

Anonymous said...

Could it be for undertable payoffs?

Anonymous said...

I think we are really losing out by losing Mr. Smith. What a class act he is and polite, professional and smart. Good luck to Phil Smith.

What a stark contrast to what he leaves behind. A Police Chief no one else would hire, because he is untrained, uneducated, crude and a bully and has mysterious sources of financial sustainment, and is a vindictive power abusing sociopath. That about covers it.

Anonymous said...

You forgot to mention to cost of running that street light in his driveway. The one that exactly matches the ones on Rte. 121 in front of his house. Maybe he got a BOGO deal when they installed in front of 140 Main St. Maybe there's a deal on the electricity too since he is in charge of approving street lights. Maybe Unitil gives perks for buying them and gives free electric power out too for a limited time offer.

The job is sure to come with "connections".

HAVERHILL — A police lieutenant in charge of the department's internal affairs was himself the focus of a secret police investigation where he was videotaped numerous times spending hours at a woman's home while on duty and then lied about it to his superiors.

John D. Rogers, 48, a police officer of 23 years, retired June 23, shortly before police Chief Alan DeNaro submitted a June 29 report saying he was prepared to fire Rogers. DeNaro cited 10 Police Department rules Rogers had violated, including immoral conduct, neglect of duty, conduct unbecoming an officer, unsatisfactory performance, truthfulness as well as having violated department rules about internal records and confidentiality.

Anonymous said...

Tell Rogers he's be welcomed in Atkinson with open arms. We're hiring and we have different rules here.

Anonymous said...

He was probably skimming off the top

Anonymous said...

Someone referred to the bully's mysterious sources of financial sustainment. I heard he's wealthy. He has/had land, developed and sold the houselots on his street which makes for strange reasoning why someone with so much money is not off enjoying it and would rather abuse the badge being an a------- to people. Its so confounding you can't understand it. Some might think he must be a sociopath considering he allegedly doesn't need the $$$. Makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

You guys forgot to include Phi's Social Security check, Jodi's salary, and the probably tons on money he pumped into an IRA during the 40 years he worked for the town.

Don't worry about him. He takes very good care of himself.

Anonymous said...

Ok. How do you pump anything into an IRA when you make $22K. Jody doesn't make very much either and your social security is based on past wages. He worked at Sears as a slaesman, not profitable.

Can't be pulling in very much.

He sold the land at Stone Pound well before the land prices skyrocketed in the late 80's and early 90's. Didn't make alot on that.

Running those lights takes a huge chunk of the budget.

Fred was quoted in the newspaper so he must be fine. That's the impression left from the article after he's been ill. Spin?

Barbara Sapia said...

fred also mentioned when quoted that 'we will beging immediately to replace the TA". Maybe we could get a 2 for 1 deal from MRI and and MRI could figure out why we have gone thru 4 TAs in about 6 years.

just a thought

Atkinshame is just a "stepping stone" until something juicy comes along. Just a quickie chunk of change.

Hire a part time secretary. Paying a monster salary for a fancy job description to do menial chores is nonsense. And there are elderly women who need work in this town and will stay. Please refund to the taxpayers the "step stone extravagance" money. We want fiscal responsibility from you. That's your job in this rough economy, people losing homes and living in their cars.

Fred you are a great guy and have done a lot for the town. I'd rather not see you force yourself through physical problems just to make a selectman's meeting. You should retire and enjoy life rather than be in the middle of the current mess adding stress to your life which sure ain't doing much for your health. Did your doctor tell you to stop volunteering? Same advice, Phil. You risk your health to keep working and it makes no sense at all. You should focus on your health and enjoy retirement.

Message to BOS, Polito, PD and the Cream Puff et al. Freedom of speech and of information is a right under the law. You will fail seeking to restrict public rights under the law. You got the message? The ACLU is watching Atkinson for just cause.

Withhold the MRI report from the citizens who paid for it....get ready for fireworks.

Aug 23, 2011

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against the state's biggest city for refusing to release records related to a $100 million gift pledged to its schools by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The ACLU filed the lawsuit against Newark on behalf of a parents group denied access to records requested under New Jersey's Open Public Records Act.

The initial April 1 request sought to review correspondence among Zuckerberg, Newark employees including Democratic Mayor Cory Booker, state officials and others involved in the deal.

"As parents, as taxpayers and as citizens, we have a need and right to know how the money pledged to Newark's public schools will ultimately serve Newark's public school students," said Laura Baker, who filed the initial request and has a granddaughter in the school system.

The $100 million pledge was announced a year ago by Republican Gov. Chris Christie, Booker and Zuckerberg as they appeared together on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

Zuckerberg described the gift as a "challenge grant" to Booker, who's trying to raise $100 million more to match what Zuckerberg has promised to contribute over five years.

The gift was presented as a way to try to improve the district, which has been plagued for years by low test scores, poor graduation rates and crumbling buildings. The district was taken over by the state in 1995 after instances of waste and mismanagement, including the spending of taxpayer money by school board members on cars and restaurant meals.

Parents said they want to know more information about how the highly publicized gift would be used.

After requesting several extensions to have time to locate documents, the city denied the request on July 19 in a letter, saying the communications between Booker and Zuckerberg "were not made in the court of the mayor's official duties."

The letter went on to say that if Booker were exercising his official duties, the documents were privileged.

What's known as "executive privilege" protects the governor from disclosing records that contain advice to him on matters related to his executive functions, but it doesn't apply to other elected officials in the state, ACLU-NJ president Frank Corrado said.

"By invoking executive privilege, the City of Newark has waded into unchartered territory in an attempt to make sure these records never see the light of day," Corrado said.

I don't see anything wrong with living alone. I get tired of having to explain how I spent the money, who is on the phone and compromising about where to go for vacations and holidays, and what I can drive.

If I had a great job, could travel around the world, have lots of friends, a nice home and car, I'm not sure I'd be so hung up on living with someone else.

If you had the choice, would you remarry your spouse? Get a different babe? Some people (many people), live with someone because they HAVE TO, not want to, for financial reasons or insecurity.

In the West, single women who own cats have long been associated with the concept of spinsterhood.[1] In more recent decades, the concept of a cat lady has been associated with "romance-challenged (often career-oriented) women who can't find a man".[1]

The term is also used to denote an animal hoarder who keeps large numbers of cats without having the ability to properly house or care for them.[2] They are generally blissfully ignorant about their situation.

I don't like about the catwoman remarks. I know the lady and she does not own any pets or cats.

Officials try to invalidate by calling people names. Whackjob and tin foil hat are two over used examples. Both imply the citizen voter is insane to criticize the workings of town government.

But I do not really oppose using names to make fun.. It lets off steam and generates a feeling of verbal satisfaction. The termBanty Rooster. I love it. I didn't make it up but I laugh when I read it. Bigumheado is also humor.

What disturbs me about the cat-woman names and endless comments is they appear to TARGET a citizen voter for harassment. We saw this physical harassment to Mark Acciard whose home and car were vandalized, the car distroyed by parties unknown.

So identifying a person on the blog giving their name and address and then continue to ridicule them looks to me like giving out the message "Hey, this person is ok to harrass".

The resulting cars full of men yelling Fuck You and playing rap music loud, honking the horn very late at night...well that's the resut of posting the victims name and home address. The signal going out to the vandal crew is ......"It is ok, you have our blessing".

Nobody should have to tell you to knock it off. But I am man enough to stand up and tell you to stop targeting this woman who owns no cats. And I hope other men are also willing to tell you to knock it off.

Only in Atkinsame!

You can't rationalize with sociopaths. Logic and common sense won't stop their attack dog behavior. A virtual pack of wolves somehow all found each other in town. Kind of a bizarre magnetism I guess. I'm amazed they haven't resorted to cannabilism yet.

The only logic they comprehend is when a higher authority stomps on their head. You can't reason or talk to the mentally disturbed. Throw in some Narcissistic Personality Disorder and you've got craziness run amuck. Let's not forget our little Napoleonic friend.

The cat posting are childish and humorous because the disturbed have nothing left but the same old same old attack methods. Which only proves the've got nothing left but to harrass and their ability weakens by the day. It's the same 2 or 3 people posting over and over about cats and we know who they are. I ignore their empty attacks because they only give more credibility to the person they are attacking. Apparently the person must be a real threat with some facts they want squashed.

Like my dad once said, it only takes a few deer to make a lot of tracks.

Police don't to their job (when is Farrah leaving?), cops enable crime then hide it by not publishing their logs. BOS backs 'em up then cuts them up behind their backs, BOS that got elected by the CON-man now trying to get him to retire, what is Bill B.s address?

How the Mafia works is the ring kissers jockey for favor with the Don for deliberative session perks. Who comes are employees, town , officials, political hacks. A normal voter comes and then leaves because they sense they are not wanted and are a target for rudeness..

Things go well and everyone is sucking off the taxpayer.. OUR THING pays and you can't follow the money yrail cause the Mafia has it worked out. Oh ignorant ones. It is all in the little details that escae you.

Sometimes Mafia captains want to move up when the Don is sick or tore up. It is about power and control, being able to call the shots. But watch out cause if the Don gets back....poor you.

Town and school boards operate in secret and pocket juicy pay raises and perks.

Look why every scum bag elected in the state is a real estate developer, a criminal or deeply in debt to a crooked road agent or thug.. There are exceptions look at the wonderful new Raymond selectman who is truly an honest, patriotic Americaan!

Bit also Look at the town of Windsor. Nobody in the Mafia there or their friends and families pay property taxes for decades!! When caught ....houses mysteriously burn down and honest citizens told to MOVE! Thanks to the Local Government Center for rescuing and paying off the scum bag lawyers.

Fiction of imagination? Look into Ot and weap! In Mass you have higher level officials with integrity who put a stop to it. READ THE PAPERS. In NH you have the entrenched ring kissers (and ass kissing judges) protecting them. That's why the citizens fight so very hard to clean out these rats nests.

It sure does piss them off when the sunlight shines on these blood sucking vampires.. $150,000 thousand taxpayer dollars spent recently on thug lawyers to fight honest citizens standing for clean government.

What do I do during the storm? I put on my orange vest and stand in the street so people know I can still stand up. I pray for a power outage so that I can fire up the generator the generous Elderly Affairs Director gave me. I bark orders from the safety of my house and my personal command center, furnished with lots of equipment. Good thing we never take inventory. Tell the guys who they can help and who to ignore. Get out the list and sort order by donation amount, big donors first. Take the guys off the street and assign them to checking on the elderly. We don't need them out in cars, we just need more elderly to serve and collect from. What's next, oh yes, feed the horse and the dog. Leave them out in the rain so that the wife doesn't have to give them a bath this month. At last, spend a quiet evening screaming at the blog and harrassing people. How good it amkes me feel to know I can say anything I want about anyone! It's almost as good as being in the public meetings and doing it in person. Balls! Who is going to stop me? I am the King of Atkinson and I rule the money and the Selctmen and DON'T YOU FORGET IT.

It makes me wonder about the last time I had any action. Let's see, it was a warm and dark August night but I cannot remember the year. I flagged her over and told her that she was going 31 in a 30. She knew she was caught and knew I was in charge. She thought I was handsome in my uniform and I lectured her on her dangerous driving habits and told her I was going to bring her home to her parents. Such wonderful people her parents, nice house on Coventry, her mother stays home with the kids the way a good woman should. Her father a pillar of the community and big wage earner. My friends, they all love me. They'd be ever-so-grateful if I bring her home and sweep it under the rug. She was not happy to hear this. It's not the first time she has been caught. How can I get out of this, whatever can I do to make this up to you? Anything, anything. I decided she had suffered enough and gave her directions to the gravel pit in Kingston for some hard labor. It's nice to see the youngsters take their punishment so gracefully, not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get down and dirty. Ah youth, so trusting and pure.

Not so sure taking the time to write about the crippled bully (in more ways than one) is worth the effort. I think MRI is setting off bomblets all over and the sheriff is in town. How "uncomfortable". Some just don't get that their dictatorship is up. People used.to it try to hang on till they die because they just can't believe Atkinshame can go forward without them. They ARE the town. Look at "Banty Hen" and how nicely the town has prospered in his absence. To be truthful, Atkinshame still has a few petty little bully dictators in office that will be forced to retire. They are often referred to by a certain "cigarette" as "the rats" who infest but will flee "the sinking ship" once the bully dictator moves to his haven..."Far Away Farm". But I don't think so. The REBELLION in Atkinshame must continue until all those who supported or benefited from the bully are made to resign.. That will send a message that if you are a bully you better stay out of Atkinson town office because the rebellion against you will be fierce. Atkinsham is a "bully dictator free zone".

How do I sat this nicely? Goodbye. Out with the expensive law breaking old bullies and in with the affordable new responsible and law abiding leaders. Goodbye expensive thug lawyers representing you. Goodbye over paid Local Government Creeps. Goodbye petty dictator "Cupie Doll". Have you considered Saudia Arabia?

Anonymous said...

It's an age-old question for faltering dictators. When some are losing their grip on power, they are pragmatic and look for a cushy home abroad rather than face the wrath of their angry compatriots.

Tunisia's Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the first Arab leader to fall this year, slipped away to Saudi Arabia on a plane in January. There were rumors that he took suitcases full of cash and gold. After running Tunisia for nearly a quarter-century, he can now expect to lead a quiet life in Saudi Arabia for years to come.

In contrast, Gadhafi showed absolutely no interest in fleeing abroad during the six months that elapsed between the start of the Libyan uprising in February until Tuesday, the day the rebels stormed into his compound in Tripoli.

For months, the rebels encouraged Gadhafi to leave, and it seemed he would have had relatively little trouble finding a new home. Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez was often mentioned as a possible host.

Now Gadhafi is presumed to be in hiding in Libya, and the rebels have put a bounty out on him. If captured, he is likely to be prosecuted at home or abroad.

Absolute power, it seems, not only corrupts — it can also confuse.

"There's a healthy dose of megalomania in these guys," John Norris, a security analyst at the Center for American Progress, says of dictators who refuse to surrender power. "If I had to find one common thread, it's a profound and fundamental miscalculation that the end is near."

Dictators who rule unchallenged for decades — like Gadhafi or Saddam Hussein —have the hardest time accepting the fact that it's time to leave, says Natasha Ezrow, a lecturer in government at the University of Essex and author of two books about dictators.

They hold all power themselves, seeking to "coup-proof" their regimes by weakening institutions and barring people with expertise or authority from challenging them.

"All dictators want to cling to power, but only a very small subset are able to do so," Ezrow says. "Within this subset, there are a select few that have become delusional after years of being in power and surrounding themselves with sycophants and 'yes' men."

Some of these dictators lose the wherewithal to keep their cronies happy and are forced to resign or flee, such as Idi Amin of Uganda and Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire.

Anonymous said...

Hussein and Gadhafi each had enough resources to buy the continuing loyalty of the "support groups" that had kept them in power, Ezrow says.

"There is still a small group of supporters of Gadhafi who are telling him what he wants to hear," she says, "feeding into his delusional fantasies of being the only person who can rule Libya, and that all the events and conquests of the rebels aren't really happening."

Why Choose A Spider Hole?

Going underground seems a poor option. Think of Saddam Hussein, arrested in a spider hole eight months after his statue was toppled in Baghdad. He was then put on trial, subsequently convicted and then hanged.

Still, many dictators continue to believe they'll be able to stage a comeback and return triumphantly.

Many dictators seem to believe they can start the rebuilding process even while they're still being hunted down.

"Gadhafi himself, in his own mind, probably does see everything as a tactical retreat," says Jack Goldstone, director of the George Mason University Center for Global Policy. "Dictators find it stunning and hard to believe when their whole countries turn against them."

After all, a lot of dictators came under attack but lived to fight — and rule — another day. Charles Taylor of Liberia, Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia and Gadhafi himself all had challenged international powers and gotten away with it. At least, for a while.

"They all tend to think that it will play out like it did the previous time," says Norris, of the Center for American Progress. "There will be a day or two of bombing and then it will all go away."

Anonymous said...

In the past, dictators who were willing to get out of the way to prevent further bloodshed could expect to be welcomed to a seaside villa somewhere. Haiti's Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, who threw in the towel in 1986 and landed in France, is one of several examples.

But the calculus is changing. The advent of the International Criminal Court and a growing sense that brutal leaders should be called to account for their crimes has made it harder for dictators to walk away without repercussions.

Ex-dictators and leaders in host countries know that at some point there is likely to be pressure to hand over the former tyrant for prosecution.

"Gadhafi's behavior is partially explained by the ICC indictment of him," says Stephen Rademaker, a former assistant secretary of state who is now with the Podesta Group, a lobbying firm. "The notion that he could ever have peace of mind with the ICC hot on his heels is, to my mind, implausible."

Anonymous said...

Not only does an ICC indictment guarantee an unsettling retirement, but living conditions for deposed dictators are no longer quite as grand as they once were, either.

International financial controls have become much tighter in the post-Sept. 11 world. So ex-rulers may be able to abscond with a few million, but it is much more difficult to get their hands on vast fortunes that may have been stolen and squirreled away.

"They have built up this view of themselves as the center of the universe," Norris says. "What to you or I seems like a perfectly reasonable choice — to take millions of dollars and a comfortable exile — seems to them like a slap in the face"

What a mockery this blog has become. It should be about the real Atkinson. Fake boobs, convertibles, cobblestone mansions. Not cats, elderly and corrupt cops. You could make a soap opera with all the Drama that is brought up here. Sounds like people like being "rats" calling the cops and complaining about things they can't change. Why don't we shut our whinning mouths and get back to the real issues out there. Like who is going to do my hair, when's the next vacation. Please Atkinson don't embarrass us. This blog is embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

Atkinshame already earned it's notoriety and status as an embarrassment. It was a cumulative achievement.

The empirical data is in the hands of MRI. It is cognitive reverie to surmise MRI can escape a truthful report. they are stuck between a rock and a hard reality! Unfortunately, the Selectmen must act judiciously or face the prospect of their heads on the Searles Castle walls.

On another, subset issue, just to be clear, you have two distinct character descriptions of Atkinson that apply. Atkinshame and Atkinsham. The "e" is the distinguishing vowel.

Hopefully, you can focus on the important issues in Atkinsham. Shift your attention off women's boobs, hair cuts or the insipid belittling of Atkinson women as cat fetishers...and onto taking responsibility for twisting RSA law to suit an ego. Also address years of questionable, unrefined perhaps misleading legal advice given to ignorant, unsuspecting, Committee Chairmen and Selectmen.

Final observation: Without honor, repentance is impossible. Consider finding an honorable man as a mentor so you can learn by exmple. Let me suggest Charles Douglas 3rd. who seeks honest town government and respect for law and justice.

We get in these scrapes because there is a town Mafia-like power hungry, egotistical group sucking a lot of money for their selfish interests. Turn on the TV and watch Mighty Mouse work and maneuver to grab every dollar and convince you sitting at home that "it is for the children" and we need more more more money. How about that little chunk of $100,000 to take down a chimney at the PD? What a chunk of change.

Talk about embarrassing!!! Talk about a scandal!! The waste of money and the duping of the taxpayers is appalling.

But don't take responsibility for creating all this mess, you political hack you, do what you always do. MISLEAD THE PUBLIC, then blame the public for the scrapes you created for yourself. You just got caught is all.

You mentioned the secret list of elderly.

Your talking about seniors who get free services from our taxpayer funded Elderly Affairs dept. WE have a right to know, under RSA 91-A, who uses the services we pay for, how often, where the trips are, how many trips, mileage, cars used, drivers paid, etc etc etc.

Under 91-A the information should be made available to all of us but became Phil's secret voter list. He refuses to provide the list and other cost information. Nobody but him has any idea how the operation actually runs in the PD. He can't stop the 91-A requests after he's gone. I wouldn't be surprised to see another lawsuit if the town doesn't follow THE LAW. WE WANT TO KNOW WHO IS SPENDING OUR TAX DOLLARS.

Once the light of day is shined on who uses our tax money you'll be shocked to find people of means who can either drive or get rides from relatives, and then they'll stop using EA. A spotlight will be shined on a group of willing favor grabbers who give their votes to Phil for a free ride. Disgusting. You sold out cheap.

The pork train's coming to an end. Here piggy piggy! Oink Oink!!

One night the big bad wolf, who dearly loved to eat fat little piggies, came along and saw the first little pig in his house of straw. He said "Let me in, Let me in, little pig or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in!"

"Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin", said the little pig.

But of course the wolf did blow the house in and ate the first little pig.

Barber, barber, shave a pig;
How many hairs will make a wig?
“Four and twenty, that’s enough.”
Give the poor barber a pinch of snuff.

Piggy banks are typically made of ceramic or porcelain, and serve as a pedagogical device to teach the rudiments of thrift and savings to children; money can be easily inserted, but in the traditional type of bank the pig must be broken open for it to be retrieved.

why should we give out the names of the elderly who use this service so bill b can read the names out and embarres them

I didn't know rats and cats could live under the same roof. You learn somthing new everyday here in atkinshame. This blog is turning in to quit the mockery. The master plan is working. All hail the king

Nobody suggested reading names out in public. More fear mongoring from bigumheado.

IT IS PUBLIC INFORMATION. THE COURT WILL GIVE IT TO US. BUT YOU'LL COST THE TAXPAYERS IN THE PROCESS. JERKS.

Just my humble little opinion

big bill b will will open his big mouth and announce on tv the names of the people that use the ea and what there ailments are

Anonymous said...

hey bill f how are the town projects comming all most sept

Should welfare recipients also be open to the public? After all it's our tax dollars right?

Why would it be embassing to read the names out? This is not connected to any notion of 'inability to pay for your own ride'. As of now, this serivce is supposedly available to all elderly who ask for it. We know this is not the case, but to say that it would embarass anyone is silly. Unless they are embarassed to be asking in itself, which is their problem, not ours.

If Bill B were to announce anything about ailments, he would be dead wrong and culpable.

However, it is a taxpayer funded free taxi service and there are legal requirements that they are bound to, giving proof of certain discoverable statistics about usage is one of them.

No one is asking for their HIPAA information (strictly medical data connected with a specific name).

They may have been mislead by the town into thinking their name only is protected but this is not true. Only their medical condition is protected.

There lies the truth of it. If you take public funds to get yourself a ride to the grocery store and you choose not to take your Bentley, your name is public information. (AND you will be branded as cheap). These records are backwards discoverable to the beginning of time.
