ATKINSON — A Derry man caught rifling through a car was apprehended by a homeowner and held until police could arrest him.

Joshua Decarolos, 21, of Island Pond Road in Derry was charged with attempting to commit theft, prowling and criminal trespassing Monday morning.

Decarolos was searching a 2004 Ford Expedition parked outside a home on Old Coach Road, police said.

Decarolos was with a friend, who was not charged in the case. When he tried to flee in his truck, it got stuck in the snow around 6:30 a.m., said police Lt. William Baldwin. He said the closest police officer was on the other end of town at the time.

"This was a good job by the residents of the community," Baldwin said. "Although I don't recommend it all the time, they called the police and did what they had to do. It's a good example of the community working hand in hand."

Police said Decarolos told them he had been driving around Salem and Derry, and he had no particular reason for picking the truck he went through. He found the door to the truck unlocked.

Decarolos faces three misdemeanor charges. He was released after he was arraigned in Plaistow District Court.

It does not mention how he held the fella until the police showed up, perhaps a 12 gauge?

PD was tied up giving Aunt Millie a ride to her doctor appt.

No crime in Atkinson though, right? Good thing the one patrol officer was not tied up at the time (whether it be giving Aunt Millie a ride or not). Once again the professionalism and dedication of the real officers of that department has shone through - keep up the good work. And to masses: please remember their dedication next week when you vote on their contract.

Bet the masses will send a message about the Pd and who runs it. A BIG message.

A job well done by the officer involved. Once again the Lt., takes all of the credit. A little birdie told me that it was Officer Paquett who made the arrest. He would make a good chief.

It also did not mention how long the guy was holding this fella until the police showed face.

Wow...the cynicism on this board is pathetic.

We have no crime, right. If we have no crime then why is the budget so high?

Unfortunately the cynicism is a by product of Phil's antics.

WOW, My first visit here! Some of you have some serious time on your hands!
Do you think...perhaps your voices could be better well served on the SERIOUS issues in town, like the economy and the losses we have had to endure.. John Lapham, Joe Derosa and Peter Lewis and so many others. (to include the elderly), people like you and me, that at one time in their life have contributed to this town in some way.
You people better wake up! There are more important things in life than slamming the forces that WE voted in.
This blog is not the answer for change. Its a drama screen!
I agree, everyone has the right to his/her's own opinion...but why should the value of your opinion matter to me or anyone else.. when all of you are anonymous?
It doesn't make sense.
Find something to do with your time! Put it into your families, or an elderly neighbor...maybe then the PD wouldn't have to be the only resource in town for our aging townspeople! (Which someday, could be you or someone you know)

"You people better wake up! There are more important things in life than slamming the forces that WE voted in. "

.... but it's ok for you.

"There are more important things in life than slamming the forces that WE voted in. "

.... speak for yourself

"{but why should the value of your opinion matter to me or anyone else.. when all of you are anonymous?"

....and you aren't?

"Find something to do with your time! Put it into your families, or an elderly neighbor...maybe then the PD wouldn't have to be the only resource in town for our aging townspeople!"

....thanks for providing such a good example.
