Atkinson will get two new fields

From the Eagle Tribune;

Atkinson will get two new fields

ATKINSON — Construction of two new fields will begin next month on East Road after voters approved funding a portion of the project last week.

Voters approved a $40,000 warrant article at Town Meeting for the East Road recreation area, but they didn't support giving the project an additional $25,000 that would have paid for a 50-car parking lot and a walking path around the two athletic fields.

Recreation Director Noriko Yoshida-Travers said the $25,000 warrant article may have failed to gain voter support because it wasn't supported by the Budget Committee. It failed, 567-1,092.

The Recreation Commission now only has $85,000 to spend on the project and plans to put another warrant in front of voters next year to finish the project, Recreation Commission Chairman Patti Mangini said. That money will go to the construction of a multipurpose field and a lacrosse field.

Mangini said after the fields are built, they can't be used for another year because the grass has to grow.

"Hopefully, we get to start using them in the spring of next year," Mangini said.

Before Town Meeting next year, Mangini said the athletic leagues and the Recreation Commission will fundraise to help ease the burden on taxpayers.

The Recreation Commission met with the lowest bidder last week and construction could start as soon as in two weeks, Mangini said.

Yoshida-Travers said the entire cost of the project is around $150,000.

WHY SAY THE LOWEST BIDER. WHY DON,T YOU SAY THE NAME OF THE COMPANY ?????????

Are we trying to make Atkinson just like Windover across the border with having a "special" playground area? Seems like it to me.

they only have 85000 because they paid 400,000 for the land

Can anyone answer this, why do we need this?

I agree with the other poster, maybe those pushing for this should just moved to "Windover"

I'm sad to read that the walking path around the perimeter of the property won't be completed until the end of the project. It was one of the big selling points for seniors as at last there would be a safe place(no traffic to contend with) in Atkinson. Oh, well! Youth needs to play, and seniors must needs to pay!

Let me get this straight - two new fields (a lacrosse field?! REALLY?!) no one can use for over a year, no walking path and no parking for the bargain price of $500+?
Unreal.

You guys voted for it.

Can't wait to see all of the accidents that will be caused because of this new park. What a bad spot to put it.

People tried to raise these points last year at town meeting, but were shouted down.

You all voted for this, don't bitch now about the cost!

$400,000.00 for the land
$150,000.00 for construction

weren't there some studies for 10k or so?

Anyway, $550,000. for a lacrosse field, and you wonder why your taxes keep skyrocketing?

And no one supported 40k...spread out over the span of THREE years for a police contract...but we need more rec fields in a bad spot that will result in accidents as one poster put it...stand by for vandalism before during and after construction...and a brand new spot for parkers...perverts...and drug users...and who gets to pick up the pieces? The lowly rank in file cop. But as Speaker Pelosi always says...its for the children!

This whole thing is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard. Is there a major influx of folks from liberal Mass moving here? It sure seems it. When you look at everything that the so called rec field will offer including the problems, it is was just a bad idea that everyone voted for because they never thought it through.

The monies granted certainly could have been used elsewhere or not used at all and saved us tax payers some grief.

I cannot wait to see what is up for votes next year, an outdoor pool?

What a waste of money in a time of high unemployment and less work. Unreal.

They didnt support the police contract because no one ever was allowed to see the contract to verify numbers. Because the last 3 contracts we were lied to about the cost. Because it is not $40k spread over 3 years but probably more like $70k. when you count everyone this affects.

Have the Lt. respond, lordy but he is making the BIG bucks in this town. Let's hope he's not on duty in Plaistow when needed though.

This town loves to spend spend spend.. i hope nobody from town runs for Govornor. Times are tough..we should all cut back. Including the town. It killed me that we had to adopt another road. The poor thing.
